Direct Mail Design: Why Budgets Are Growing in 2026

A new State of Direct Mail 2026 report from Lob surveyed 250 senior marketing and operations leaders. It found something striking. Companies now dedicate a quarter of their marketing budget to direct mail. Nine in ten increased that spend this year. For anyone weighing up where to put marketing budget in 2026, this is a clear signal. Direct mail design is back on the agenda in a serious way. It’s not a nostalgic add-on. It’s a channel businesses are actively growing.

Why direct mail is regaining ground

The reasons aren’t complicated. Digital channels have grown noisier and more expensive. Inboxes are harder to cut through than ever. A physical piece of mail still grabs attention when it lands on someone’s desk or doormat. An email rarely does that.

The report backs this up. Ninety-four percent of leaders say direct mail performs better when marketers integrate it with other channels. Ninety-eight percent rate it effective for winning back dormant or lapsed customers.

Bigger budgets don’t guarantee better results

Increased budget alone doesn’t explain who gets the best results. The strongest-performing teams in the report weren’t necessarily sending the most mail. They invested in personalisation, timing, and measurement instead. They treated direct mail as a proper channel, not an afterthought.

Getting direct mail design right

This is where direct mail design earns its keep. A well-targeted list and a generous budget won’t save a piece that looks generic. Nor will they save a piece that says nothing worth reading. Design has to do real work. It needs to catch attention fast. It needs to carry a brand’s identity consistently from envelope to insert. And it needs to give someone an actual reason to act, rather than bin it.

We’ve built direct mail alongside brochures, catalogues, and digital campaigns for years. Our clients span a range of sectors. The rule never changes: mail only earns a second look when you actually design it to.
